Jan 30-Feb 1 2004. We stayed at this hotel based on reviews found on this website. Not a 5 star hotel (I think not even a 4 star hotel).Thinks we liked:* Location: Dowtown, close to transportation, tourist places, financial institutions. * Staff: Friendly, helpful, kind, willing to help you. * Bathroom: HUGE!!! Nice tiles. Aveda products * Breakfast: Complimentary and varied. * Portable crib available at no price. Thinks we did not like: * THEY CHARGE LOCAL PHONE CALLS!!! * THEY CHARGE AN ADDITIONAL ENERGY SURCHARGE, WHAT?????? * Small bedroom (King bed) * Awful bed, not enough pillows. * Tight space between bed, nighstand, desk, entry, etc. Conclusion: TIGHT!!! * Mildew found in bathroom. No fan in bathroom. Would I stay there again for $110 a night (discounted price!!!)? I would really think about it. Maybe I would try another one for that price.
I selected Orchard based on these reviews. I think the same person wrote all of them. The Orchard is a nice little hotel. Nice. Not luxurious. Definitely not 5 star. I think the reviews made the Orchard sound far better than it really it. The Orchard is a nice hotel for a reasonable price. Nice. Not luxurious. I'll walk you through my stay. It is extremely well located. You are mere blocks from lots of great places. The cable car stops at the corner. BART is just down the street. The exterior is pleasant enough. The lobby is small but it does have a great sculpture in it. The rooms.. well, let's just say they are great for a 3 star hotel. They do not remotely compare to a 5 star hotel. I had a small suite. Small. You open the door and there's a small entryway. Yellow and white striped wallpaper. A rather stained neutral patterned carpet. The living area of my suite was tiny. The furniture was nice but a tad worn for a relatively new hotel. The large TV and DVD/CD player with surround sound were nice touches. There was also a wet bar with the mini bar built in. But did I mention the area was small? The bedroom was larger than the living area but there were a few annoying things. Only a couple of pillows on a not-very-comfortable bed. A nightstand with a lamp on one side. A side table with no lamp on the other. No waste basket. Again, the DVD/CD player was a nice touch. Bathroom. Large.. big bathtub.. separate shower.. lots of space. But I'm picky and the grout was showing a little too much mildew for my taste. I also thought to myselt.. too much wasted space in the bathroom. On the other hand, the Aveda products were great. Overall.. the entire suite was maybe 500 feet? And yes, I could hear the cable cars. Now I give the staff a lot of credit. Everyone was friendly.. helpful.. chatty. When I asked for a banana at breakfast, someone from the kitchen staff went and found me one. Speaking of the breakfast.. coffee awful.. juice great. And for a continental, it has a lot of variety.. including cheeses and cold cuts that make a lovely bagel broiler. Would I stay there again? Probably not. But I also didn't mind when I paid my bill.
The Orchard Hotel is a first-class surprise! Located in the busy Union Square district of San Francisco, it's close to cable cars, shopping and lots more. A special tip of the hat to Cornell the doorman, who smoothed out a small problem with car parking with ease and aplomb! I've stayed in pricier hotels on Bush Street and elsewhere in SF... but the Orchard beats them all! Nice breakfast buffet... and as a sign of an active hotel... lots of people in the bar area on a Saturday night! The rooms are spacious - I had a room on the top floor... and a great San Francisco touch.. I could hear the clinging of the cable car as it went by! Just a friendly place all around! |
