Expect moderate San Francisco weather, where cool summers and mild winters almost blend into one. Temperatures in the city seldom rise above 70 F/21 C or fall below 40 F/4 C. Morning and evening fog is common during summer months for San Francisco weather but it rarely remains through the day. (Little or no rain falls from June to September are attributes of San Francisco weather.) Winter average maximum temperatures for San Francisco weather are in the high 50s F/10 C and only drop to the upper 40s F/4 C at night. Rain showers can be common November through March. San Francisco weather literally varies from neighborhood to neighborhood -- it may be sunny and pleasant in one area and foggy and cool in another. No season in San Francisco is really out of the question for a visit, though September and October are the warmest and driest.

Nearby Marin County enjoys similarly moderate weather, although its location, sheltered from the cool ocean winds, keeps it warmer and sunnier than San Francisco weather (it's also cooler at night). Expect temperatures to reach 85 F/29 C in some Marin County communities. The summer-morning fog or cloud cover usually clears well before noon.

When to Enjoy the Best of San Francisco Weather

San Francisco is a popular location any time of the year. Summer is the prime tourist season, so prices are higher, lines are longer and finding a parking place is about as easy as working out what to wear to the Folsom Street Fair. San Francisco weather in the summer is none too hospitable anyway: the bay is often foggy, while inland or north in the Wine Country it's often too hot and dusty for comfort. Local San Francisco weather patterns are highly unpredictable, but generally the best months weather-wise are between mid-September and mid-November.
